Hybrid energy storage system sizing is essential to the drivability and cost of an EV and renewable energy power station equipped with a HESS. A few fundamental bits of knowledge about ideal HESS measuring have been given in [ 89 ].
The cost function integrates two different design targets: 1) 500 Wh/L energy density for the hybrid battery and 2) fast charging of the hybrid battery within 6 min. These numbers are just examples to compare different hybridization options.
Hybridization decouples energy and power and thus increases design flexibility to achieve a better trade-off for a wider range of EV applications. This paper proposes an effective framework for optimal sizing of such hybridized battery packs for a typical EV, namely the Mitsubishi MiEV.
Genetic algorithm is used to solve the optimization with respect to weight, aging, and charging speed. An effective approach is proposed to select the hybridization architecture. Results show hybrid battery system provides a nice trade-off among the design targets.

The fuel economy of the hybrid battery pack is obtained at 169.5 Wh/km and 176.73 Wh/km for the NEDC and WLTP cases, respectively. This is slightly higher than the mono battery systems which achieve a fuel economy of about 169 Wh/km on the WLTP cycle.
