The fire protection challenge with lithium-ion battery energy storage systems is met primarily with early-warning smoke detection devices, also called aspirating smoke detectors (ASD), and the release of extinguishing agents to suppress the fires.
During charging piles and onboard batteries, there are problems such as line overload, short circuits, poor contact, improper charging operation, and heat dissipation failure under high-temperature conditions, which are very likely to cause fire accidents.
Most of the existing generic image/video fire databases are familiar fire images, such as forest fires, building fires, factory fires, etc. There is no large fire image dataset for electric vehicle charging stations.
As lithium-ion battery energy storage gains popularity and application at high altitudes, the evolution of fire risk in storage containers remains uncertain. In this study, numerical simulation is employed to investigate the fire characteristics of lithium-ion battery storage container under varying ambient pressures.
Fig. 11 presents real-life smoke images captured under varying ambient pressures at two time points: 50 s and 80 s. When a fire occurs in the LIB pack stored in the energy storage container, the smoke generated by the fire source spreads upwards as the mass flow rate of the fire plume increases and due to buoyancy.
Self-ignited EV fires during charge were reported during the last years, with causes such as external short circuit, previous cell damage, charger fault . Cases of long-duration fires were reported, for small EV with low capacity batteries , luxury cars [10, 11] and vans involving fire and smoke damages to the nearby buildings [9, 10].
