It has been shown that some of the photoelectrochemical cells using silicon, gallium arsenide, cadmium selenide, indium phosphide etc. can make photoelectric conversion with efficiencies as high as those of the solid photocells made of the same semiconductors.
The distinctive feature of the photoelectrochemical cells is its capability to transform solar energy directly into stable chemical energy. They can also transform light energy into electricity, but in this latter function they must compete with the solid photocells.
As a reference, the photoelectric conversion efficiency with 13.84% of 2.33 μm thick silicon thin film solar cells is compared with the previous reports .
