2. Dimensioning of the system First determine the necessary effective power (kvar) of the capacitor bank in order to obtain the desired power factor. Design the capacitor stages in such a way that the sensitivity of the bank is around 15 to 20% of the total available reactive power.
To test an individual capacitor in a capacitor bank, perform a capacitance measurement test. Connect the LCR meter between the capacitor's terminals and the Earthing terminals. Turn the dial switch of the LCR meter to the capacitance units and check the value of the individual capacitor. Compare the measured value with the Name plate value. Repeat the test for all other individual capacitors.
While deciding the size of capacitor bank on any bus it is necessary to check the voltage rise due to installation of capacitors under full load and light load conditions. It is recommended to limit the voltage rise to maximum of 3% of the bus voltage under light load conditions.
