The SFCL and a blocking capacitor help slow the fault current's increasing rate. The line current fully passes through the SFCL and the blocking capacitor. Assuming that at t = t 1, the line current is designated as I 1, the instantaneous value of the line current is obtained as in (4).
The size of the capacitor C affects the speed of fault separation when a fault occurs. The insertion of the blocking capacitor into the fault branch results in the charging of the capacitor by the fault current. As the capacitor current gradually diminishes to zero, the forward voltage Vc.max of the capacitor attains its utmost value.
The electric capacitor is used to stop the increase in fault current in the circuit and work to solve the short circuit problem in the line in a short time.
When the fault current it in the line reaches zero at time t = t 2, the capacitor voltage equals the source voltage, and IGCT 1 and IGCT 2 turn off normally. Below is a correspondence between the line capacitor voltage V c and the fault current it.
As the capacitor charges, the voltage across it rises, reducing the current flowing through the resistor. In contrast, when the capacitor discharges, the voltage across it is already at its maximum, so the current through the resistor is initially zero. As the capacitor discharges, the voltage across it decreases, increasing the resistor's current.
FCL is a circuit breaker in the power system to protect the microgrid from significant fault current levels. In the normal state, it does not appear, and when a malfunction occurs, it provides a circuit with high resistance that limits the fault current. An ideal FCL should meet the following requirements :
