This study aims to investigate the utilisability of commercial buildings’ roofs for solar PV focusing on four types of buildings - shopping malls, office buildings, hotels, and hospitals. The study investigates the wide-ranging features of rooftops of these buildings which can restrict the application of PV.
19 types of restrictions towards rooftop application of PV have been identified. Utilization factor of building roofs has been found to range between 0.45 and 0.52. Solar PV is one of the most successful renewable energy technologies being used in buildings. Buildings however pose different types of hurdles towards their utilisability for PV.
Both flat rooftops and pitched ones (slate, pan tile, plain tile, trapezoidal profile metal sheet, Kalzip-profiled metal sheet or fibre cement) are suitable for solar PV. PV can also be incorporated within the fabric of the building (i.e. the roof or the walls of the building can comprise PV panels). This is known as Building Integrated PV (BIPV).
Building-integrated photovoltaics is a set of emerging solar energy applications that replace conventional building materials with solar energy generating materials in the structure, like the roof, skylights, balustrades, awnings, facades, or windows. Lake Area High School south-facing façade in New Orleans, LA includes solar technology.
The installation of Solar PV panels requires as clear access to incoming solar radiation as possible. In the building sector, PV panels can be installed on rooftops as well as facades. Typically, facades of commercial buildings are characterized by architectural designs and aesthetic features making them virtually unavailable for PV application.
The building sector has been one of the most successful application areas for solar PV. The technology can be applied across all types of buildings i.e. residential, commercial, and industrial. Solar PV can also find success in KSA buildings [ 8, 10 ]. In the country, however, thus far, the major focus has been on large and utility-scale projects.
