Conventional battery thermal management systems have basic temperature control capabilities for most conventional application scenarios.
Thermal management system (TMS) plays an essential part in improving the safety and durability of the battery pack. Prior studies mainly focused on controlling the max. temp. and temp. difference of the battery pack. Little attention has been paid to the influence of the TMS on thermal runaway (TR) prevention of battery packs.
At rates of 1C and 2C, the thermal management system effectively reduced the temp. of the module to less than 40°C, and the temp. difference was controlled less than 5°C between battery surfaces of the module.
Professionals and engineers have significantly progressed in developing various thermal management techniques to optimize battery performance. Active cooling systems, including liquid cooling, air cooling, refrigeration-based cooling, thermoelectric cooling, and forced convection cooling, have been explored in previous studies.
The capability of air-based battery thermal management systems (BTMSs) to regulate battery temperature at higher discharge rates is constrained by their lower heat transfer efficiency. Conventional active BTMS, which involve electrical power and moving parts, often add to the overall cost, complexity, and mass of the battery system.
