It’s possible that many electric car batteries will be reused, not recycled. An older EV battery may no longer be useful for long-distance driving but could still have enough storage capacity to find a second life elsewhere.
Recent breakthroughs in recycling, together with a spate of technological improvements, mean that within a decade or so most of the global demand for raw materials to build new batteries could be met by recycling old ones. Lithium, manganese and cobalt are widely used to make electrodes called cathodes, the most expensive part of a Li-ion battery.
Elsa Olivetti, Jerry McAfee (1940) Professor in Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) and co-director of the MIT Climate and Sustainability Consortium, says that like all forms of recycling, the EV battery recycling business will be driven by which materials are most profitable to salvage.
What you might not know is that most OEMs are already working with one firm for end-of-life and second-life hybrid and EV battery work. That company is Ecobat, which has a large recycling centre located right here in the UK, in Darlaston, West Midlands. We were invited to take a look around to see what happens at the facility.
They power everything from electric vehicles, scooters and bikes to digital devices, and are essential to store energy from intermittent renewables. As the demand for batteries as clean energy solutions grows, so does the need for effective battery recycling to ensure a sustainable and competitive industry.
However, as the world transitions from gas-powered to electric vehicles, the demand for these materials will far outpace the supply from recycling, so mining metals such as cobalt will still be necessary. An EV battery contains much more than just nickel and cobalt, however.
